Your next chapterSunset drinks by the seaHaving trouble opening a Thai bank account?
A retirement visa needs money in a Thai bank — but many banks won't open an account without the right visa and paperwork. It's a frustrating loop, and it's not your fault.
- Turned away because you're on a tourist visa or visa exemption
- Asked for a certificate of residence you don't have
- Different branches telling you different rules
- Unsure how long the money must stay in the account
How we help
- Check your situation and advise the right visa route first
- Prepare the documents banks usually ask for — certificate of residence, proof of Thai address and more
- Help with your TM.30 address registration
- Advise which branches are more likely to accept your case — in Hua Hin or near you
- Accompany you to the bank and translate on the day
- Plan your 800,000 THB deposit timing so it's ready for immigration
Account approval is always the bank's decision. We make sure you arrive with the right documents and the right plan.

Non-O, Non-OX or LTR — know the difference
All three are for people aged 50 and over. The main differences are how long you can stay, how much money you need and how often you deal with immigration.
Non-O Retirement Visa
The classic 1-year retirement stay, renewed every year at immigration — in Hua Hin or wherever you live. Open to all nationalities.
- Age 50 or over
- 800,000 THB in a Thai bank account, or monthly income of 65,000 THB, or a combination
- 1-year permission to stay, extended annually
- 90-day reporting while in Thailand
- Re-entry permit needed before leaving Thailand
Non-OX Long Stay Visa
A 10-year option (5 + 5 years) for citizens of 14 eligible countries, including the UK, USA, Australia, Canada and much of Europe.
- Age 50 or over, from an eligible country
- 3,000,000 THB in a Thai bank, or 1,800,000 THB plus annual income of 1,200,000 THB
- Thai health insurance (outpatient 40,000 / inpatient 400,000 THB minimum)
- 5 years from first entry, extendable for another 5 years
- Multiple entries — no annual renewal stress
LTR Visa · Wealthy Pensioner
Thailand's Long-Term Resident visa, approved by the Board of Investment (BOI). Ten years, and far fewer trips to immigration.
- Age 50 or over
- Pension or passive income of at least USD 80,000 a year, or USD 40,000+ plus USD 250,000 invested in Thai government bonds, FDI or property
- Health insurance with at least USD 50,000 cover (or USD 100,000 in deposits, or Thai social security)
- Report your address once a year instead of every 90 days
- Fast-track lanes at participating airports
- Multiple entries, plus your spouse and children under 20 can join you

Retirement visa questions
I don't live in Hua Hin — can you still help?
Yes. We're based in Hua Hin but help retirees all over Thailand. We prepare everything for you and come with you to the bank and to your local immigration office on the day.
Can I open a Thai bank account on a tourist visa or visa exemption?
Most major Thai banks no longer open accounts for tourists or visa-exempt visitors. That's why the order of steps matters. We'll look at your current visa and plan the right route so you can open an account and meet the financial requirement in time.
How long must the 800,000 THB stay in the bank?
Immigration checks that the money has been in your Thai account for a set period before you apply, and expects a minimum balance to be kept during the year. The exact timing can vary, so we'll give you a clear deposit plan based on current immigration practice.
Can I use my pension instead of savings?
Yes. For Non-O, a monthly income of at least 65,000 THB can be used instead of, or combined with, savings in a Thai bank. Proof of income usually comes from your embassy or official pension documents — we'll tell you what's accepted for your nationality.
Am I eligible for the Non-OX 10-year visa?
The Non-OX is for people aged 50+ from Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK and the USA. You also need higher savings or income and Thai health insurance.
Do I still need 90-day reports?
Yes, anyone staying in Thailand for 90 days or more must report their address. We can file reports for you. See our residency services for 90-day reporting, the Yellow House Book and more. LTR visa holders are the exception: they report once a year instead.
Is the LTR visa right for me?
The LTR Wealthy Pensioner visa suits retirees aged 50+ with a pension or passive income of at least USD 80,000 a year (or USD 40,000+ with a USD 250,000 investment in Thailand). It's approved by the Board of Investment and requires more paperwork up front, but you get 10 years and only one address report a year. Requirements can change, so we check the current BOI rules for your case first.
What if I'm already in Thailand on another visa?
In many cases you can switch to a retirement visa without leaving Thailand. It depends on your current visa and dates, so contact us early for a free check.
